Default The cost of a filling...

Hi

You read a lot about the cost of dental treatment in Canada on this site, and Im am beginning to wonder more speceifically about just how much treatment does cost? For example, how much would a standard filling cost overe there? (I got one the other day here - £15). Any other examples appreciated!

thanks

You can contact the Ontario Dental Association for a list of standard fees, although it seems most dentists charge a little more. Cant remember the last time I had a filling, but I recently had a crown reinserted (a five minute job) and that cost $50. Standard 6 month service and scale is ~$130. I doubt a silver amulgum filling is less than $150, once you take Xrays ($25) and freezing into the equation. Many dentists here may not even do amalgum fillings anymore as there are concerns about the mercury. Fancy tooth coloured filling is the norm here Dental benefits are a major thing here...dont even think about braces etc without it!

Im having 3 wisdom teeth out in a few weeks, cost is estimated at $2500, $500 of which is not covered by my plan.

Heres a link to contact the ODA for a fees guide if that helps.

Good timing. My wife just pulled a tooth out and has been given a quote of $4000 to put it right.

thanks for the feedback guys - the costs dont sound quite as bad as Id expected, but I've got 2 kids who I suspect may need braces at some point (aarghh!). My partner is Canadian, and grew up over there. She, and most of her bothers and sisters needed braces when growing up, so she is well aware of the potential costs we are likely to come across with braces overe there. I was just curious about the more general costs involved (Im partial to needing regular fillings you see).

I think I can safely say that the ongoing costs will be higher if you drink the Irn Bru and eat the deep fried Mars bars on a regular basis.

If your partner's Canadian you may be able to get health insurance through her employer that will cover you lot as well. Otherwise there's private insurance that covers the things the public system doesn't.

As a self-employed man I have modest private insurance that covers 80 per cent of my dental, many drugs etc. for around $50 a month.
