Hi,
We are considering buying a house with 2 acres of land but most of it is treed. How much roughly (with very good access) would it cost to clear 0.5 acre of trees and have the area lawned?
If this is a real pain/expensive we won't bother. The house is great but there is hardly any grass for our daughter to play on.
Thanks,
CB

Glad you asked that question because we too may buy a house on some land ourselves. Some of the pics show good sized garden grounds and others show only a tiny patch. Another thing we may do is buy some land and custom build a house. Some of the land for sale has been partially cleared. Any kind of general costs would be appreciated.

Depends on who you go to but you could hire a local handyman for about $20 an hour..it wouldn't take them long to clear half an acre. Turn your back and it'll be done...the whole 2 acres. Just make sure whoever does it has workers comp insurance so if they insure themselves on your land, you're not going to get sued.

Costs to put in a lawn depends on whether you have enough topsoil in the first place. Typically you need 6 inches of soil to establish a lawn. We had a 9000sq ft area graded and topsoil trucked in this year and it cost us around $7k. We then seeded ourselves ($300 ish) and a couple of months later had a lush green expanse!

If the lumber is valuable, then some of the cost can be recovered by its sale - there's so much being cut here most people can't give it away, even for firewood.
