Correct procedure for getting kids in schools
Hi all
How do you go about applying for your childrens schools in Canada.
Do you go about contacting the school direct or do you have to contact the local district office?
Im sure it is on this forum already but trying to find it aint always that easy
Thanks all
Chris

- Click on Wiki (on blue bar at top of page)
- Then click on Canada
- Click on Education section
- Click on 'Expat Schooling' article which tells you how to go about enrollling your children in school
Alteratively, click on Wiki and then type into the search box to find the relevant info.
Short answer - contact the school board of where you will be moving to!
Hope that helps.

not sure about other cities/provinces, but here in Calgary we got the info from Calgary Board of Education (CBE), we took our son and relevant details to Admissions dept and that was it, took about 2hrs in total.
Hope this helps,

I emailed a few schools before we came to find out a little. Daughter was dead excited about one school allowing magic carpets on the snow hill
When we got here, I just asked the neighbours which school was the catchement school and we went along and told them we had just moved, filled in some forms and that was that.

We found the school for our catchment area (used Edmonton Public Schools website) and went directly to the school, told them we'd just moved to the area, completed some forms and the kids started the day after. Nice and simple

Same here. When we arrived, we went to the CBE and filled some forms and my 5 yr old was given a space.
I have recently found out about other schools within the CBE. Whats the difference btw the regular program, traditional learning center, Charter schools and gifted schools.

If you are interested in special programs, such as French Immersion, the catchment school won't necessarily be in your neighbourhood.
But like the other comments, you can find out which school would apply to your neighbourhood and contact it directly.
Then there is busing (if your school is more that a certain distance from your house). Which in Calgary is cheaper than paying the lunchroom fee if you don't need a bus. I think the forms for the bus are available at the school too.

Why spend two hours if you can go to the board Web site, look at the school area boundaries and see what school you can go? And then go directly to that school - takes 15-30 minutes. If there are several - try some research on school ratings, but those are not available for all schools.
