Hi there. I currently live in the UK and am considering migrating to canada specifically Calgary (as I have a friend their who has suggested that I move to Calgary), in lieu of the current job market. I would be very grateful if anyone could provide details on how to go about migrating to Calgary before obtaining a job.
Thanks

It's highly unlikely that you will be able to get any visa without a job offer.
Unless you have a Canadian relative, or can invest quite a bit of money and would qualify under the Entrepreneur category, or are in a job on the list of 38 'occupations in demand' which would qualify you as a Skilled Worker (assuming you also have the requisite number of points, no criminal record, proof of funds, pass the medical etc), then you will require a job offer to get a visa.
This is the list of 38 occupations so you can see if you'd qualify under any of them........................http://britishexpats.com/wiki/THE_LIST-Canada
If not, then you will need to find a job first so have a read of these for more info.......................http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Quick_...an_Immigration

Also, you mention 'in lieu of the current job market' and I assume that you are referring to the UK job market when you say that? In which case, you should be aware that Canada is also in recession and workers are struggling to find jobs, or being made redundant, just as they are in the UK. Plus you'd need quite a bit of money to get over there so you might be better off staying put if your only reason for going is to find a job!
Best of luck.
