Conservative anti-immigrant ad

Hi folks,

I've generally tried to keep politics well clear of my efforts to help other immigrants through this forum and others, although as many of you know I spend most of my time doing advocacy work on environmental issues. Today I'm going to make a brief exception to that, as I think this is too important not to share with this community...

This Conservative Party ad is airing only in Quebec, where anti-immigrant sentiments are stronger than elsewhere in Canada. It is one of the most offensive pieces of revolting, toxic propaganda I have ever seen from a mainstream party in a democratic country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcptS3RSvyY

I'm a strong believer in our obligations to care for those fleeing persecution. Canada's refugee protection system certainly isn't perfect, but it is recognised world wide as a shining example of many of the ways to do things right.

I don't care how you plan to vote on May 2nd (if you can even vote at all) but please consider sharing this with your immigrant friends and loved ones so that all Canadians can make up their minds knowing what the man who wants unchecked power really thinks about immigrants.

Matthew

Thx for sharing

It's targeted toward illegal immigration/human smugglers?

If you're going the right way, there's nothing to be afraid of

This post is way too left wing for me to reply politely. Keep the politics off this site. Why not just go bore your friends (if you have any) in a pub with this stuff. There's enough arguing on this site without you and your left-wing crud added to the mix.

Forums are for a variety of views not just your own. Remember that and don't be so rude.

He has a good point. We're forever bombard by crypto-socialist propaganda these days. Its most inappropriate to be arguing about politics only days before the royal wedding. :frown:

Good point, well made.

It's not an anti immigration ad. It's anti human trafficking and illegal immigration, I don't see much wrong with that.

Agreed.
Not wanting to stir trouble, but this post by the OP could even be seen to be encouraging illegal entry to Canada...

Me too. I thought the ad was carefully worded (assuming the translation was accurate) to make it clear it was about illegal immigration and people trafficking not legal migrants. I would rather hope that anyone who'd been through the hassle and expense of moving to Canada legally might be against those things as well.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but do you folk think it's OK to associate very distorted images of Ignatieff and Duceppe with photo-montages of human trafficking?

What next, aborted foetuses in a bloody bucket?

One would hope. The Tamil Tiger supporters basically shut down a Toronto freeway 2 years ago demanding that this country do something to help their terrorist brethren in their homeland. Last year, boatloads of "refugees" start arriving on the BC coast from Sri Lanka that were turned away by Australia. How many of these people do you suppose speak English and have skills in demand to work in Canada? These people are going to live off of the government (that's mine and your money) for a long time. At least the conservatives are trying to match skilled immigrants with skill shortages and improve immigration overall. Some of the left loons on here would have you believe that Harper and the conservatives want to create a Canadian race of blue eyed blonde haired christian Aryans.

More to the point, some of the rightist loons on here (and more importantly the Conservatives) would have you believe that the opposition parties support human trafficking.

Well, at least you know who you are ;)

Who is responsible for the laws allowing the Sri Lankan's in? Did they get a fee boat pass from the captain? Or perhaps they paid someone to smuggle them. In Quebec, many illegal immigrants arrive from Haiti and old French African colonies.

IIRC that was August last year? So, Jason Kenny was responsible.

Sh! Don't give him ideas.

They run a version of this commercial in BC as well. It really is gutter politics. However carefully they choose the words is it still designed to appeal to the base fears of a certain demographic.

It is factually incorrect as well. It portrays the opposition leaders as helping these people "jump the queue." There never has been and, I sincerely hope, never will be a queue for refugees at Canada's borders.

yes, and whose immigration laws was he operarting under? You know as well as I do that if Kenny sent those boats back you would be the first one screaming racist conservatives, blah blah blah.

Could you back up your statement with proof? You don't have a clue what goes on here in Quebec.

And besides, isn't everyone coming here to get away from the immigrants anyway?
