Complete Idiot's Guide to Canada

I am thinking of writing a Wiki article that contains some very basic, bare bones information about Canada that many newcomers to the forum don't know but that they would do well to find out very quickly.

The purpose of the article would be to provide new comers to the forum with useful information but also to save my sanity. Instead of telling someone something for the umpteenth time, I could point them to the Wiki article.

If this thread accumulates helpful suggestions, I'm willing to gather them up and assemble them into a Wiki article.

And, by the way, I'm not planning to actually call the article The Complete Idiot's Guide. The thread title was just a shameless ploy to get your attention. :p

I will kick off the list.
The number one thing I would like new comers to the forum to understand is that almost any question they ask and almost any advice they provide has to be qualified by mentioning the province to which it pertains.

Many newbies just don't understand how many aspects of Canadian life (health care, schooling, administration of drivers' licences, etc., etc., etc.) differ from province to province.

If they have not yet chosen a province and are just asking for general information about a topic, it would help if they mentioned that too.

Q: Do you really only get two weeks of holiday?
A: Yes. Deal with it.

Novo did a thread recently...Frequently answered questions.

I could nominate a few complete idiots to write it if that would help...better not though.

It would be helpful if where relevant they could mention which class they intend to immigrate under - I've seen many a family class applicant in virtual meltdown when they're told it's 4yrs wait, don't do your medical upfront, etc.

I think some basic tax information would be useful and some indication that keeping house in UK may have implications for capital gains in both UK and Canada

We could write a 6" thick text book on Canadian tax. We would need to concentrate on the issues that concern new immigrants and people on work permits:

Tax residency
RRSPs
GST/PST
Provincial variations
Filing tax returns
World wide income
etc etc

As a newly qualified CGA ( results came out yesterday, waheeeeey:D ) I'd be happy to help with this.

The key feature of a discussion forum IMHO is that people always ask the same questions over and over again. If you really wanted you could search through previous posts and find all the answers but nobody does, they ask their question and most of us are helpfull enought to answer them anyway event though ts all been asked before. So do we really need a wiki article? I say let people ask their questions and give everyone else the satisfaction of answering them over and over again in our own charming style. If everyone time someone posed a question the reply simply said "see Judy's wiki article" then where would the fun be in that?

I took Judy's post to mean collating a list of pointers on what information to include in your question, so we could give more relevant responses? It's confusing when someone says "you need to get health cover for your first 3mths" in answer to someone who actually doesn't, but they haven't mentioned their destination in their opening post and so the opportunity to point that out is missed.
