Hi there, I guess it's Good Morning over there at the moment? I'm typing this in Vancouver and wanted some help/advice from anybody who can offer it.
My husband and I got BUNAC one-year working holiday visas and have been over here for nearly 2 months. We're not getting on particularly well finding "interesting", well-paid jobs in Vancouver but having fun dotting around doing bits and bobs. We have to move out of the house we're living in in Vancouver for the summer, so thought we'd take the opportunity to get out of the city and head to the Island or the interior. We've (hopefully) been offered work running a hostel in a tiny village called Cumberland, in the Comox Valley, but the job is really just for one person and the money is pretty low. For anybody that knows the area, what sort of chance is there for picking up work up there? We're worried that if we move up there (and it could be as soon as this weekend), we'll be stuck with only one low-paying job and will run out of money very quickly, or have to live off baked beans for the summer . . .
My husband is a writer by trade but is happy doing manual labour or similar. I'm more office/admin bound, with a background in music admin and marketing, but am also happy to do physical work (so long as it doesn't involve cement!)
What would you do? Take the challenge and see what happens or try and head to somewhere for the summer with more chance of work, like Tofino? Any advice much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi there, I can supply you with a link for Cumberland http://www.cumberlandbc.org/ but cannot really advise as we live further down the Island in the Cowichan Valley. There is also Mount Washington http://www.mountwashington.ca/index.cfm but they may have more job openings for the Winter rather than the Summer. Cumberland is also near to Courtenay and Comox so may be worth investigating those places and further up the highway is Campbell River. I know there are some people on here from up that way so hopefully they may pick up on this thread and can give you further info.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. The job offer fell through so we're now looking further afield. Fernie, anyone . . ?

Sorry your job fell through as there are quite a few seasonal jobs here as summer comes in. It's a great area with a lot to offer. Wish you luck
