Having done a similar(ish) commute for 12 months, I would say 50-60 minutes driving on a good day and upto 2 hours on a REALLY bad snow filled day.
Its totally down to personal choice, I'm not a big fan of Public Transit in Calgary but then I'm not a fan of the road system here either. I chose to drive because it gave me a greater sense of control (oh and I hate the enviroment, so what ever I can do to hasten its destruction
)

The car does come out occasionally, or if he has other appointments after work. I guess it can mostly be done if you are hardy enough.

I tried the C Train last week. This wasn't the full journey from the northwest but from the downtown station on 8th street to Shawnessy. With a 20 min walk at each end, a 20 min wait for a train and 30min on the train it was approx 1 1/2 hrs in total.
In its favour the fare is quite cheap and the trains pretty regular. I think there should have been 10 mins max wait for a train but there were announcements about a train failure which might account for the 20 min wait. I thought the 8th street station was pretty basic but noticed a new station is being built just over the road. I'm suprised the new stations aren't more enclosed to provide some protection in the winter.
I might just about consider using the C Train if I lived within 10 min walk of a station. The problem is the walk at the other end. The job location isn't actually Shawnessy but to the east of Macleod and the walk up to the crossing over Macleod would not be a pleasant experience in the winter.

There may be connector buses that would assist but, to be honest, I wouldn't want to have to rely on them. They are usually only every 20 mins and just missing one (as the drivers love to pull away just after a train has pulled in) in the winter would be tough to take

I noticed there were some buses connecting into Shawnessy station so that might be worth looking into. There is also a slightly more direct route I could have taken which would probably bring the walk time under 15 mins. The C Train isn't ruled out.
