Commuting from Barrie to Toronto
#31
The difference between one in Guelph and one in Barrie is that the occupants of the former are more likely to have teeth and less likely to have to facial tattoos.
For the OP:- you should ignore comments like this from him. He has a warped sense of humour and/or beliefs. The people living in Barrie look no different than those living in Guelph. For good, hard-working people it's a fine place to live.

Pickering is a nice town as is Ajax, both are within minutes of the Lakeshore GO and affordable.
That house is close to Brock plaza, and walking distance to Pickering Mall, yet it's in a quiet set back area of town. Also easy access to 401 or north west to ETR 407.
I think a two week reccy is required ???
Edit
Ok I just had a look at Ajax, south of the 401, which is IMO the nicest area with easy access to the lake and oh my, prices are a bit higher than 4 years ago ??? What happened HG ?

Yeah we're going in March time for a holiday (Also to see how cold it could be) and see if we like it. I'm just looking now for places that are nice so I can get an idea of where we should go and have a look at.

You might need to come a bit earlier than March to experience the worst winter weather, maybe Jan/Feb. Barrie would also be subject to lake effect snow- might be some something to think about which impacts your life...

Toronto is a big, sprawling city. If you work in the north central part, driving to and from Barrie isn't so bad.
If you work near the downtown core taking the train is a great option and you can live most anywhere north, east or west of the city. However if your work is located outside of the downtown, you may want to consider living on the same side of the city as your work. That way you don't have to cross the city in rush hour to get from work to home.
An exception to this would be if you work anywhere along the northern edge of the city near the 407 toll highway. It is expensive to use, but typically not congested, even in rush hour. It makes east west travel very fast.
If work takes you downtown or north of the city so that you can use the 407, I'd suggest you look towards Burlington. Maybe not right in Burlington where it can get expensive, but in the outskirts. That way you have access to the trains which run every 30 minutes, plus you have the option of getting on the 407 toll road.

That's only a realistic option for most people if they can use the Lakeshore line. I fired someone once because he'd decided to try to commute by public transit from Georgetown (Ontario, he'd have done as well from Georgetown DC).
