Default Common law or married...

Myself and my partner are planning to emigrate to Canada, but as yet we are not married. I will be the principal applicant, but I am unsure of whether we should get married before we start the emigration process. I have heard that under the new regulations, common law relationships are now accepted. Does anyone have any information on this??

Cheers people,
Austen.
