Sort of related..I have Chequing and Savings accounts at First Direct which I've not accessed for 5 years or so. I finally got around to arranging a call to reactivate recently which included a "know your client" type interview by phone. I was very open that I live in Canada, pay taxes in Canada and don't have any plans to return to the UK any time soon. FD seemed perfectly happy for me to keep my accounts. I do have a small balance in both.
