Default Coming to Calgary

Hello all.

Been hanging around the board for a while and thought it was about time we introduced ourselves.

Me, my wife to be (25 days...) and our 2 daughters (20 months & 7 weeks) are moving to Calgary on a WP, we hope to pick up from POE on our honeymoon. Then we will be heading over to live in august.

Are there any other young couples or families in the area?
How are you settling in?

Dave

Thanks Gryphea,

Yeah we're both looking forward to the wedding, and it seems like our families are being much more reasonable than a lot of people on here, a lot of people seem to be having lots of trouble.

How did you go on with your work permit, did you apply to london, or are you getting it when you get there?

I got my LMO last year, but we had to put it off for a bit. so we HAVE to be out there before october so london wasn't an option for us really.

What will be you be doing in calgary? what area's are you looking at living in?

I won't work for a few months and then I will look for part-time work. My OH is a civil engineer, there are a few engineers of various types going out to Calgary shortly. We will live in NW somewhere nearish his work.

What are you going out to do? and where are you planning on going?

Hi Dave,

I moved to Calgary a year ago this week. We rented for a few months, so that we could look into areas that we liked and bought a house in September of last year, in the NW of the city. We have got to know a few people in the neighborhood and have just started receiving invites for bar-be-ques etc. We both catch public transport to down town and see the same faces every day, which has helped getting to know other people. On the whole I have found people very friendly. We have both enjoy Calgary from day one and dont miss much about the UK. I have also found people in the work place to be friendly and welcoming.

I feel more settled here after only 12 months than I ever did when I first moved to London, in the UK.

Good luck with the wedding.

Lake Chapperal does look nice and the fish creek park suburbs. I work in a field allied to construction as well!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Gosh you are very busy at the moment what with a new baby and getting married and moving to Canada!!

We are also moving to Calgary in August (although my OH goes at the start of July to start work as a structural engineer for a consultancy in the city centre). We will be living in Okotoks to the south of the city. We also have two children but our boys are aged 9 and 6.

Good luck with the move and all the very best for your wedding!

Lisa

Hey guys,

Good luck to all of you with moves, weddings, new jobs, LMO waits etc...
Been here since August last year and bought a house straight away. Moved to New Brighton in the SE, not far from Lake Chaparal and Auburn Bay. To be honest all the communities in that neck of the woods are attractive and the people are all new neighbours so are all eagre to make friends. You could also look at Sundance (more established) Copperfield, Copperleaf, Mackenzie Town, Mackenzie Lake and Cranston all newish communities with Transit routes to the town centre.

Anyway, if anyone wants specific details then just ask away.

Cheers

Dobbie

Hi all,
just been reading thread and found it very interesting and helpful.
We (wife 2 kids 9 &7) are hoping to emigrate to Calgary also. We have been looking in a few places and even researching Okotoks, Cochrane etc and very much liked what we are finding.
I am and have had great responce from plumbing companies, that are willing to talk and meet, so am hoping to land a job with one of these. I have not been plumbing for very long, but they are still very interested.

We are coming over to stay in Canmore in July?August for holiday/research trip, so any tips and advice would be great

Many thanks, all the best to you all, have a great wedding
regards,
Carl

i think you will find that okotoks is at the moment still in the area of foot hills, some 20 miles or so from calgary. the house prices are at the moment rising quite sharplyin okotoks and the house building program is fast approaching the building capset for it. our son moved there 6 years agowith his family of three,we will be joining them some time later this year
