Post collision damage

Hello
going on recce trip and to land in september, looking to hire a car and got not a bad price for a compact for the week £107, then they want to add collision damage waiver at £40 do I really need this or is it just another way of getting extra money from us

cheers

take it .. you don't need added problems .. in the grand scheme of things it is a drop in the ocean.

Nothing will happen .. but isn't the peace of mind worthwhile?

Always read the small print before you book. Alot of companies include CDW as standard which may make the initial quote look a bit more expensive but you won't find "add ons" as you go along.

You do need CDW. You will probably still have a small excess to pay in the event of an accident but look for no more than $250 excess.

That's also fairly cheap, I think; when we had to rent a car recently they wanted $25 a day for CDW, but we didn't have to take it because my girlfriend's insurance already covers rental cars.

Given that we were paying about $16 a day to rent the car, it did seem a bit steep!

Just a thought. Check the terms of your credit card as some cover CDW on rentals for free.

Well worth checking those terms.

It's usually the Gold or Platinum versions of the major credit cards that cover CDW and the entire rental for the vehicle must be paid with that card.

The fine print gives conditions of use. Check the benefits and features of the card, or better still call the issuing organisation to be sure. They are unlikely to hide benefits in the small print section.

I would also look at liability coverage. Rentals usually come with the minimum e.g. in BC $200,000, which is nowhere near enough. We carry $5,000,000. Accident claims are going through the roof, in Canada as well as the US. Even a simple whiplash can be dragged out and soaked for everything a claimant can get. Some auto insurers will offer rental car coverage, either as an add on or part of the auto policy.
