Re: Is it cold in Canada?
They did some research on the net and had info from a couple of people who had taken up job offers. They thought they were ready for the move, but now regret the decision big time.
They have to pay for health care, their son has to wait two years before he can be enroled in a state school. In the meantime they have to pay for private nursery care. this was all free in the UK. they are also sick to the belly of the limited choice there is in the supermarket and the lack of an underground train service where they are. They had all of this at their convenience in London. They are now earning less, feel as though they are starting from scratch again, and now feel they have made a backwards move in life. They can't wait to get back and won't even consider another area of canada now. The cold is just too much for them !!! The only good thing to come out of this for them is to realise how much they really had going for them in the UK. They are going to move from the inner city to a quiet suburb when they get back.
I suppose Canada it is not for everyone.

One thing we looked at was childcare, healthcare, weather etc etc, to move to another country without doing your sums is silly........
Yeah the food is different, but that is where making your own comes into play, i feel happier that i know what is going into my children, unless they live miles from anywhere, then there supermarkets are the same as ours here, to say the choice is not as good is mad, as i think there is too much choice sometimes with all the new food that i can offer them, plus i have a child with diabetis and a very fussy eater, the last few weeks have been hard on us, but you know what....get over it and get to know your foods more
Healthcare, what do you pay your NI for in the uk, so its not free
you also pay for dental care, prescriptions, eyecare etc etc, here in alberta they have stopped the payments now every month for healthcare, but you still pay private healthcare for the other stuff, oooooooo same as the uk.........
Childcare - you get free playgroups for kids 3yrs and above and yeah the kids are in school earlier than canada, but you know what my kids are kids here and they can play on the street/park feeling safe, couldnt say the same in the uk :curse:
We never had underground stations where i was in the uk, so that is a london thing, so never miss it, maybe they should look at a second car, i have one and i am never in with the kids 69c for gas, why would i
FFS you would think that they would of looked at this before looking, yeah its cold, but its -40 out there at the moment, snow way above my little ones waist, but the sun is out and i am happy...............
Maybe a good idea for your friend to head back, see what they say when they have done a few months of grey skys hey.................
To OP, we arrived here in september, lovely and warm, kids out at hallowen with water butts in there hands as it was well hot, now snow, -40 and real cold, but you know what, i love the culture, the people and being here, if what ever reason i start to hate the place, ill play my video....that will bring me back to earth
Still miss warburtons bread though

Moving from the uk with young children, you need to do your homework so much before the move..........

Re: Is it cold in Canada?
I'm always puzzled by the "I prefer Canada's (dry) cold to the cold in the UK."
I too prefer (or is that cope?) better with cold here than in the UK. I'm just not sure it's anything to with the type (ie dryness) given the enormous differences.
I mean, a dry minus 40 is still a hell of a lot colder and more unpleasant than a damp zero isn't it?
I think it's just that we are so much better prepared for the cold here. None of this "Do I need my hat and gloves, after all I'm only going around the corner to the offie, maybe I'll just put my hands in my pockets" that we'd have thought about in the UK and then maybe felt cold from not dressing up.
Here it's automatically on with the winter boots, long johns, extra warm coat, ski mask, furry hat etc....and even then you feel your nostril hairs freeze up.

The only problem I find is when I want to walk to the Mall which isn't that far from us. Or when you go into shops. As we wrap up so warm, when we go into stores it is so hot.
I always take the car now so I can just go in thin jeans and t-shirt. You can't win.

That really is their choice though isn't it! Presumably they waited in line like everyone else and if they choose not to use it it's up to them.
