Welcome
Assuming you're landing as a PR, you're supposed to - but I bet hardly anyone has. If you want to prepare a list in advance, use the form B4/B4a and instead of ticking "goods to follow", tick "goods accompanying". If you don't do it and you're asked for it, you can do it on the spot at Customs - no big deal. Unless you're bringing expensive jewellery or such, I really wouldn't worry about it...
See the BE wiki article for info about importing goods, forms, etc. - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Goods_To_Follow

same as above, we were not asked about what was in our suitcases, and they waved us on through when we were trying to show them or goods to follow list etc, they just were not interested, but that was halifax

But I wonder - if you are not waving around any "Goods to Follow" forms for processing, whether they might be a little more interested in your suitcases?
I'd probably prepare a basic list - with approx values - just in case
Especially if you are bringing a laptop, decent camera or Nintendo DS for example (so add serial numbers). Two suitcases of purely clothing is not very interesting - but if you lug eight suitcases of "as much as you could carry", it might be checked!

We came in september with file full of list...
never asked us for anything...not even goods to follow
We was advised that we had to goto airport to custom clear our goods, arrived at depot picked the paperwork up, went to airport, they stamped the paperwork, didnt want my detailed list just the shippers one and back to depot to give them the forms so they could then deliver me goods
simple really and a good afternoon at ikea afterwards
Good luck on the landing, it is real easy

Us too, we had everything from finances proof to lists and documents of everything that we thought they would need for our PR finalisation.
The girl that dealt with us had us sign a form each and waved us on our merry way.
I was nervous wreck
going up there thinking that we didnt have all the things together. Jeez we went over the docs time and time again.
I was blown away, 10 mins in and out and thats the truth.
Dead easy, I hope its like that for everyone
