Default Clearing customs!

Sorry if these actual points have been covered before - I've searched and can't find the exact answers.

We are expecting our shared container to arrive in Vancouver SOMETIME in the next few weeks - I joke not, it has been a nightmare:curse: :curse:

We will be collecting our goods by van as we live on the Island. In order to clear Customs do we physically see the Customs officials or do the shipping firm deal with them? I have read through loads of shipping posts and can't find any definate rules.

Thanks

Jo

Depends on who you paid to do what . You'd probably need to check with the shipping company, I had no idea whether they were supposed to do it or I was supposed to do it until I got a phone call from their agent asking me to send them the 'goods to follow' forms.

We had to come down to Vancouver and do it ourselves - but then we only shipped 10 or so boxes over. We booked an appointment with Customs and were in and out in less than 5 mins!

We did ours ourselves. Agents in Canada called to say we needed to phone customs and get an appointment, did that for the next day, then the customs officer called the agent to say the container was cleared... and that was that.

TrishB arranged for someone to do it as it was about 5hrs journey for her to nearest customs office, so maybe your shippers arranged something similar for you?

That's what we are hoping to do but after our conversation with Williams in Vancouver this afternoon we don't know what's going on. They can't even tell us where in Canada our (shared) container is:curse:

Thanks. We want to go ourselves - we are collecting it anyway! Williams want copies of Citizen Cards, PR cards, passports and goods to follow - well I think that's what they want Unfortunately the Williams person who is dealing with our shipment speaks very, very poor English(Canadian) and it is difficult to have a conversation

That seems pretty normal though; mine was supposed to be in Montreal around the beginning of September, but eventually turned up in Vancouver in the middle of October!

that's the information i got from the shipping company which handles my 7cbm christmas present here (delivery scheduled for this friday - it's in parksville at the moment...)

CANADA CUSTOMS

IMPORTING YOUR HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS

Upon the completion of the Canada Customs brokerage form XY [moving company] will arrange the customs clearance
formalities. However, you may still be required to present yourself at Canada Customs and make a personal declaration at time of
clearance.

All shipments entering Canada are subject to an inspection.
Shipments destined for Canada will be remanifested and taken to the nearest customs office/warehouse in your area.

1. Call XY to confirm your contact-delivery address, telephone number and if your effects are ready for customs clearing.
2. When your effects are ready for customs clearing, we will prepare the appropriate Canada Customs forms and arrange the customs clearing formalities. XY will contact you after the customs clearing formalities, to arrange delivery or pick-up of your effects.
