Re: Civil Engineer in Canada
You can work in engineering without a PEng; and you need one years experience reporting to a PEng before you can actually apply.
Experience suggests NOT applying as soon as you 'get off the boat", rather finding work as best you can and applying with 2-3 years canadian experience for a smoother passage. Obviously there's a chicken and egg scenario there. #1 is make sure you contact the local chapter, they will know the ins and outs. The UK HQs (not to mention universities) are gobsmacked that there's such a barrier with a related country, notwithstanding the presence of an international agreement. |

Re: Civil Engineer in Canada
In my limited experience when I was researching moving to Canada I briefly contacted PEO which in kind words replied "dont bother us again". However, through my girlfriend (who is from Etobicoke) I met her uncle who happens to be an engineer and licensed by PEO (I believe he may be a civil but not sure). His advice was that even though PEO do not recognize CEng in his experience it is beneficial to have nonetheless before moving to Canada. Mind you this is anecdotal evidence. I am not far off getting mine fingers crossed!

Re: Civil Engineer in Canada
I guess I just need to take the first steps of looking for suitable opportunities and maybe try to network a bit on my next trip there.
Thanks for your replies about your experience of it everyone, really appreciate it :D |

its tit for tat in my opinion because the ICE (for example) don't recognize P.Eng as equivalent to C.Eng and allow direct transfer. Apparently it is to do with the non mandatory and un audited CPD hours with the Canadian associations.
It's easy for any organisation to set up specific rules to keep another group out (eg CPD). Funnily enough CPD is required by some provinces, and its not universally required by all institutes. |
