Citizenship vs PR card - help!

Looking for some advice please.
My situation:
Currently have PR card that’s due to expire end of March 2010. I applied for Canadian Citizenship one month ago, and have not yet received any letter back.
I realize I have left the Citizenship application very late
but now it’s been submitted what are my options? I am worried that nothing will happen before my PR card expires and then I’ll be in a situation where I’ll be working in Canada without CIC consent. One idea is to apply for my PR to be extended again but I don’t know if that will get processed in time anyhow? Does CIC take into account mitigating circumstances (such as sole earner of family of 4 etc), if I approached them on this, in an effort to speed things up?
Has anyone else been in this position?

If you have PR, just apply for a new PR card. Just because the card expires, doesn't mean you don't have a right to be here. You're panicking over nothing.

Let me get this straight then….
I can continue to work legally in Canada after March 2010 even if the card expires?
Is there no ‘expiry date’ on me being a Permanent resident then? – just the card?

My understanding is that as long as you meet the residency criteria you keep your PR status. You should still send off for new cards though as not having them will probably make things difficult - especially if you are traveling.

Some countries don't allow dual citizenship, so it's not that uncommon for people to live in Canada as PRs for a very long time if they don't want to give up their original citizenship.

Yes - but I isn't the only legal requirement to keep your PR status staying here 2 years out of the previous 5 on a rolling basis. Nothing to do with your PR card - which is really just proof of your status, not your actual status. A bit like a passport proves your citizenship, but you are still a citizen if you don't have one.
