Citizenship Test

A letter just arrived from CIC telling me that my citizenship test is on May 2nd.
I applied in October so luckily the processing time was a lot shorter than expected.

Thanks Mrs. 007. From what I hear it's not too difficult:unsure: My biggest problem is the test is a 8.30am so I have to find someone to take the kids off my hands for a few hours as my OH is going to be out of town on work.

Re: Citizenship Test

Can you still get dual nationality or did they do away with that and you have to be one or the other....??

Good Luck on the test, i hear you have to sing the national anthem, for that they wouldnt let me in cos i'd burst some ear drums

Re: Citizenship Test

Dual nationality for Canadian / Brits is no problem.

Singing "Oh Canada" is reserved for the swearing in ceremony.

Do you know if the swearing in and the test happen on the same day?

My little boy is 5 and my girl is only 11 months. I'm going to see if I can drop then off at a friends place but it will have to be at 7am so I can make it to her place and then to the Scarborough Citizenship office (plus I have to go by public transit.)

No Months apart -

Test took less than 5 minutes from the "you may open your papers" now.

Do a search on here you'll find a cool website in BC with all the answers and practise tests.

Oh God! I was caught cheating on my Canadian Citizenship Test; I had to write out, one-hundred times, "I renounce my [expletive] British citizenship." Wot a yolk.

The only downside of dual citizenship is that the British Government will not offer any assistance if you fall foul of the law enforcement authorities in Canada. As I never had great expectations of the British government in the first place it was not a great worry.

As Canada is my home, and as I expect to be here until I turn my toes up, citizenship just seems obvious and natural.

Most financial benefits and responsibilities are based on residence, not citizenship.

Why would you expect assistance if you break the law?

Has anyone done their test in Toronto (Scarborough) recently?

Normally I wouldn't. However, there are some countries in the world where the law does not operate with due process as it does in both the UK and Canada. If I was an arbitrary victim of a foreign government where I had done nothing wrong I would like to think my government would help out.

It is not an issue with dual citizenship of the UK and Canada, but I just mentioned it for completeness.

Aww that Alvic:thumbsup: I'm glad they've processed the application so quickly it would have been a shame not to get my Citizenship before I leave.

Well as JAJ is fond of pointing out what if years from now my kids (both born here) decide to move to Canada at least if I have Citizenship I can come and go a lot easier.

Unless the law changes. It's already being discussed in Ottawa.

True, but I figured for the sake of $200 I may as well apply.

It was discussed (not all that seriously) in 2006 and nothing came of it. There was a previous "discussion" in 1993/94 with similar outcome.

There is no restriction on dual citizenship in the Citizenship Bill currently before Parliament.

And even if the Government did decide to "ban" dual citizenship (and could get legislation through both Houses of Parliament), it could only take effect from a future date and not affect those already dual citizens. Not, at least unless it is prepared to revoke the citizenship of millions of Canadians who happen to also hold a foreign citizenship, quite often one they are not aware of.

Suggesting otherwise is just scaremongering, really.

You left it in my "My Documents" folder it seems:)

One advantage of citizenship is if you are staying long term you dont have to keep renewing your PR card.

Also you can leave for an extended period and have no issues coming back

Thirdly you can vote

and Finally if you want to work in the states its a lot easier to go with a Nafta permit for a few years.

For $200 its a bargain insurance policy

Thanks for the link I did actually find the booklet and I've been doing the practice test all weekend:thumbsup:

I just hope it's not too long a wait between the test and the ceremony.

No scaremongering was intended. I was merely pointing out that the matter has been the subject of discussion within government, and fairly recently.

I don't see an outright ban of dual nationality happening. What I can envisage as a possibility is that a probationary period be imposed on new citizens. New citizens would have all the same rights and benefits as cradle Canadians but would have to be resident in Canada for (made-up numbers) five of the first ten years of citizenship or face losing that citizenship.

It would be quite easy to monitor (eg through tax returns), although introducing it may be a tad tricky from a constitutional point of view.

Are you aware that there was a pretty similar law in place prior to 1967 for naturalised Canadians?

I was aware that the law had changed some time ago but I didn't know that bit. Why was the change made?

The hardest bit about the test is remembering to take all the paperwork you're asked to. I saw someone turned away because they'd forgotten a document.
