I think anyone not born in Canada or to a Canadian parent should have to spend at least 12 months out of 5 yrs in Canada for as long as they want to keep their citizenship. This would give them real experience of Canadian life.

In me case I only applied for citizenship when I was thinking of going home with the view that if I got it before I left I'd be very lucky. I lived in Canada for almost 9 years and my OH and kids were all born in Canada. I booked my flight back to the UK before I had my Citizenship and it was just luck that I took the oath 10 days before leaving.

Firstly good luck for the future, but if it's not right now why will it be right in the future? I don't know how old your kids are but I'm on my 8th house in 8 years and my kids have had enough as have my wife and I. We don't know whether Canada will work for us as we've got a long road ahead of us, but it sounds like you want to be in the UK with the backstop of Canada as and when you choose. Is it where you are or Canada on a whole that's not working?

That is what the residence requirement to gain citizenship is there for. What you are proposing is two-tier Canadian citizenship which would have a range of unintended consequences.

One of which would be a reduced acceptability of the Canadian passport as other countries would no longer be sure that Canadian citizens would have a right to return.

Also bear in mind that many naturalised Canadian citizens have no other nationality.

I'm strongly opposed to any such requirement. The Canadian passport is a one of convenience to me as the British and Swiss ones are to my children. These are documents to which we are entitled and which we retain in case of need or desire to use them in future. Holding multiple citizenships is about residency options for the future, not commitment to a country; my children care as much for Britain as I do for Canada but they're still nominally British as am I nominally Canadian.

Basically you have to have been a PR for 3 years the time before that can count for a bit but I'm not sure how they calculate it. All the info should be here

I been doing some reading + i read that a person has to have been in canada
1095 days since landing to apply for citizenship.
My wife + 3 kids got landed on 22sep 2005. I was the main applicant under the entrepeneur category. We have some conditions on the landing document which we have met and submitted an application to have the conditions removed .Its been nearly 9 months + my application to remove conditions has not been assigned to any officer yet.
We have now been in canada for more than 1095 days-can we apply for citizenship in these circumstances.

This is one of those not very well thought out ideas. My wife was aged two when her British parents moved to Canada. She's much more Canadian in outlook than British but why would she be deemed worthy of losing her Canadian citizenship if she happened to move out of Canada for at least five years.
