We live in Calgary and applied May 2006, got date for test September 2007 and got sworn in two weeks later. So I think it depends where you live, Calgary have lots of immigrants moving here so it takes longer, if you live in Yellowknife it will probably take only a day!!

Applied October 15th myself having been over here just over three years (holidays etc outside Canada excluded) Though the $200.00 fee did sting more than a little! Lot of money to be allowed to vote . But that could be a while away yet...we need an opposition first...

Best to all.

Does anyone know if your sponsor (in my case my Canadian OH) needs to be at the Citizenship ceremony?

I cannot imagine that there is a requirement for your sponsor to be there but it would seem to me to be a fairly normal thing to do.

I only ask because I had to postpone my PR Landing (in exotic Scarborough!) back in 2002 because my OH was working in Europe. I finally applied for citizenship a few weeks ago. Hopefully OH is here for the ceremony it would be a bit grim having to go by myself. I guess it's a bit early to be thinking about that.

I'm pretty sure that visitors (eg Canadian spouses) were excluded from the courtroom (Toronto, St. Clair E) for the ceremony when I did it. I suppose there is a waiting room someplace.

BTW, 8 months application to averring in for us.

So at what point in the ceremony do they tattoo the Maple leaf on your butt? Is that why visitor have to wait outside

I can't really comment on the PR bit because I had no sponsor and got the PR visa before coming here. My (Canadian) OH was with me when I landed but only because we were on the same plane. It didn't seem to be an issue with the CIC officer who landed me. The summons to the citizenship test and ceremony (same day around here) did not say I had to bring anyone along. It did say that I might like to have people at the ceremony. Most people did.

Most people do that on Yonge Street after they've been kicked out of the bar for drunk & disorderly behaviour later on.

When I was processed the courtroom was completely full of us newbies. The prohibition on visitors seemed just question of space. I guess it might be different in less popular destinations for immigrants.
