Default child benefit?

Hi, sorry this question must have been exhausted before but I cannot find my answer in the wiki (any direction appreciated)

When we ship our two yr old to BC (with us on the plane of course), do we apply for child benefit in BC or continue claiming in the UK (if possible). I believe the system in Canada is indexed linked and so I feel it would be beneficial if we could continue claiming the UK one (the polish can when they return to Poland...but that is the EU I s'pose)

FYI. my Canadian wife will be working and will be my sponsor...I am keeping my UK business.

LOL I also agree that it would be beneficial to continue claiming the UK one...!!

However, back in the real world you can't.

If you are coming over on a TWP you can only claim after being in the Country for 18 months.

People on PR can claim straight away.

Yup that is correct. By indexed linked I am assuming you mean to your salary? Yes it is. And you have to give details of earnings made outside of Canada before you got here...so you might not get a great deal once you convert UK Pounds into Canadian Dollars.

Indeed. When we arrived here and got around to claiming we got very little to start with as our previous UK earnings had been so high but our first year of Canadian income balanced things up in our favour a little more.

Yes, the whole UK pound does tend to mess the first year up a bit!

Do you have to resubmit every year like the UK or is it done automatically after your tax returns ? As soon as I asked that I slapped my forehead....when is it ever that simple !

I understand that it is just done automatically in July from your tax return....though am sure this cannot be true!

You probably have a million more forms to complete before they can start it again!!

Just confirmed with a colleague that it is done automatically when they get the tax return.

I don't think you'll find that's correct - my understanding is that the Polish claiming child benefit have to be resident & working in the UK, their children can be living wherever they want them to, but in order to claim the benefit the parent must be a UK resident worker.

If they are contributing they should have the same rights as any other UK resident.

Where I gather there has been some fraud is people trying to continue claiming the polish child benefit at the same time - defrauding the Polish gov.

Edit: - I love the terms used by the links - "soft touch Britain" etc for people who are paying into the system and getting the same as anyone else out of it, nothing like a good daily Mail hate-stir
