So, fake smiles and kiddy straightjackets aside, do you see why he's here now?!

Just been on the dog & bone this morning to the child tax benefit office as we had not heard anything from them since applying for it in Aug. She told me it had been processed and we will get a monthly payment from Nov and in Oct will get it all back dated from May too, so worth applying I say. Its not a large amount but if you are entitled to it ....claim it.
They take your UK earnings for the previous financial year into account when calculating it, so we will probably get more the following year when all earnings will have been in dollars.

For those wondering about it, the cut off for one or two child families is at about $97000, but once your taxable income exceeds ~$36k the amount of CTTB per child steadily drops with income. Its rather complicated though and depends on ages and number of kids as well, and is a slightly reduced amount in Alberta, I presume because there is no PST there.

The basic benefit is $1,228 ($102.33 a month) for each child under age 18 (but the basic benefit is different for residents of Alberta).
There is a supplement of $86 ($7.16 a month) for your third and each additional child.
There is a supplement of $243 ($20.25 a month) for each child under the age of seven. This supplement is reduced by 25% of any amount you or your spouse or common-law partner claimed for child care expenses on your income tax return.
A benefit reduction from this amount will occur if your family net income is more than $35,595. For a one-child family, the reduction is 2% of the amount of your family net income that is more than $35,595. For families with two or more children, the reduction is 4%.

A few people keep saying how it's not much, each case is different but it's worth $400 a month to us.
Tia, apply now, the worst they can say is that you are not entitled to it.

I apologise to the original poster for hijacking this thread but hopefully they have been able to learn something too - I sure have, but I am still in a dilemma as to when the best time would be to apply. Although I only have one child, my earnings at the end of this year will be tiny so I will definitely apply.
Just one thing - do they take into account how much money you have elsewhere or is this Children Tax Benefit thingy purely based on your earnings?

When we applied, the only thing they asked for were proof of earnings. As we had no canadian income (hence no Canadian tax return) we had to show earnings from the UK. Sheila had a P60 and wage slips but i had nothing, they wrote back asking me to declare "world income for 2004 = $0.00"
There are no disadvantages if you apply now and lots of advantages.
Send me a PM if you want to know my personal situation, eg. why i declared no income for 2004 (all above board and legal)
