Child Benefit

Hye,

How much is the maximum child benifit I could get when one is not working and the other is earning pretty low. The web says about 226 CAD monthly and GST/HST of 141.50 quarterly. Have I got my figures right?

The child tax benefit is calculated on the previous years household income. If you are just moving over, they calculate your sterling income for the previous 12 months and multiply is by 2.5 on average. Most people find out that they get nothing, as UK incomes are higher. It is also based on the amount of children and the ages of your children, as the amount gets lower as they get older. So no, your figures are probably not right!

As a new immigrant I believe that you are not entitled to benefits. Therefore I highly doubt you'll get anything.

Feel free to reply to other peoples posts with advice. I'm sure they would apprecaite your info.

From the CRA at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/dchmf/icbc-...p?ident=client :

If you resided in Canada throughout 2003, enter the amount from line 236 of your tax return.

If you were a newcomer to Canada or a returning resident in 2003, enter the amount from line 236 of your tax return and the income you earned outside Canada.

If you were a newcomer to Canada or a returning resident in 2004 or 2005, enter the income you earned outside Canada in 2003.

Income earned outside Canada-the same as determining net income in Canada; gross income from all sources less deductions.
