Hmph... where is the 'oh crap' button.....

Best go and check the booking with my hubby:frown: Sure he mentioned that company

Hi Lorna, we use Continental quite often flying into Halifax via Newark and haven't had a problem with them yet. Baggage allowance is good, double what you get using charter flights. You just need to get your ESTA form if in transit through USA - it takes minutes to apply for and get online - link here

Hey Neal... We are flying in Jan and the flights we got were actually really expensive. We only chose them because they accepted airmiles. OH thinks they would have been about £670 each.. There were flights advertised cheaper with iceland?? air and they were about £400 each, but they wouldn't take our airmiles. Def. worth shoping around!

We didn't have any major problems with Globespan, certainly no major delay problems (i think our flight back was perhaps 1hr late leaving but that was it). It was more of a service and comfort issue - the staff were OK but not great, food was pretty dire (even for plane food!), no seat TVs only bad quality mid-aisle ones, not great leg room, extra charges to book a seat (which they don't tell you about anywhere).

However I do have to add that both our bags were slightly overweight when we left Canada, and they didn't say anything or charge us any extra. So plus points for that!

I've flown Continental before, to the US, and thought they were pretty good?

Flown several times with Continental and initially found them to be good but the last 2 flights I have had with them have been delayed and last flight was told once I got to the airport that I had been delayed for a week and after saying well I am back at work on Monday and this was Thursday evening they managed to get me something for the following day (Good Friday) but was stuck at Newark airport for 15 hours. Did complain but wasn't expecting any reply and didn't get one

Re: Cheapest flights to Halifax NS?

For anyone thinking of booking with Canadian Affair/Air Transat, don't go by their 2010 summer brochure and think they fly twice a week Gatwick/Halifax. They don't.

Just found out today that the twice weekly flights listed don't actually exist and they are only flying (in and out) on Thursdays. (Which has entirely screwed up our visit in summer.) AND there are no Fredericton summer flights (again, despite being listed in the brochure) so Plan B out the window also. The helpful lady at CA did suggest we may want to fly back from Ottawa (yeah, right - at least 14 hour drive away, so with three kids, not really an option).

Iceland Air are coming up reasonable London/Halifax, though they do fly all round the houses (eg via Iceland or USA). Not as cheap as CA though, but fly on more days. Continental and BA both a lot more expensive. Globespan? Summer flights not listed, though could check back in January.

So if you can fly Thursdays and from Gatwick, CA is the one. Any other times you will be looking at mega bucks or long, non-direct flights. We're now looking at £2700 for flights with CA for five of us (we are stuck with summer holidays - hubby is college lecturer and can't get time off outside hols) so your £2000 for four is about the same level. You might get it a bit cheaper if you can fly outside July/August and can go with CA.

Hey, just looked at that JetAway - Saturday flights and CA sort of prices. Might not work for us as we are doing multi-city, but would definitely work for in/out Halifax.

These are new, yeah?

Great bit of info - I've searched for seems like forever and they didn't come up. Thanks for this!

John... think you will get a lot of help here, but probably better starting your own thread.
We too are in the process of emigrating to NS. We started with endless surfing on the net... followed by trips to the book shop, then went to one of the EXPO meetings. We had already decided that NS was for us, so the expo thing was of limited value for us. (found we had already researched most of what was on offer) The next thing for us, was to ascertain the possibility of work. What do you do?? Once you have decided what sort of Visa you have to apply for , the fun really begins... endless research and paper work for a while. We are going for a recce trip in January, and are meeting up with Mike and Orla from UK2novascotia. We have found them really helpful so far. We decided not to go with a emigration agent/solicitor, as having read other posts, have noted a mixed response and many people thinking they are not worth the money etc. Obviously upto individual preference!
Could go on forever, but how long is a piece of string....
As we are a few months into this process, we would be more than happy to share all our experiences so far with you... Once you have done a few posts you can pm us. (NS is strangely enough our favourite subject right now:lol:)
Think our email is visible on the profile page.
Good luck with your research and feel free to ask anything!!
Lorna and Robert
