Dean, it kind of depends where you'll be working.
You're a carpenter, so would I be correct in thinking your work base will be in the southeast industrial area?
If I'm right about that, a hotel or motel along Macleod Trail would be a good option. If you want to self-cater, it would be best to stay in a suite hotel or apartment hotel.
Travelodge Hotel Calgary Macleod Trail at 9206 Macleod Trail South is situated in an excellent location, within walking distance of a supermarket, many other stores and Southland Train Station. It's a convenient location from which to reach the southeast industrial area. Travelodge is not an upscale chain, but it's clean and decent.
I don't know when you'll be arriving. I phoned Travelodge Hotel Calgary Macleod Trail and enquired how much a room would cost in March. The reservation clerk said $123.99/night for a room with 2 beds and en suite bath. A business suite, which has a microwave and fridge, would cost $157.99/night.
Please note that what I've said is specific to this property. There are other Travlodges in Calgary, and there is even another one on Macleod Trail South.
Remember that hotel prices usually are quoted before tax (6% GST and 4% Alberta Room Tax).
If you want a downtown hotel, and if you want it to be a suite hotel, you could consider the International, 5 Downtown Calgary Suites, or the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites at 1020 - 8th Avenue SW. There are several Holiday Inns in Calgary so, if you want this one, be sure you're reserving at the right property.
If you want to stay in Motel Village, in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, Econolodge Inn & Suites University gets good reviews on TripAdvisor. Be warned that Econolodge Motel Village, which is in the same motel complex, gets some very poor reviews on TripAdvisor.
There are several suite hotels in the northeast quadrant. Most of them have the word "airport" in their name. Just do a Google search for SUITE HOTEL + CALGARY AIRPORT.
Unfortunately "cheap hotel in Calgary" is an oxymoron.
Do not under any circumstances stay at the Pointe Inn just off the TransCanada Highway / 16th Avenue NE.
Hope that helps.
