Default Cheap Car Insurance - Ontario

Hi,

Tried looking around but cant seem to find a simple answer to the follwoing questions:

1) What is a cheap car to insure in Ontario?
2) Best place to get Car insurance?

I am looking to buy a 2nd hand car, but just need some advice on what cars are cheaper to insure as i have seen the cost of insurance here is high compare to the uk.

Insurance in Ontario is not based to any great degree on the type of car. Cheap cars can be insured at less cost but it doesn't much matter what brand or model of car is chosen. Try a series of brokers but be aware that a credit check is part of the quotation process, if you have a credit rating then the act of getting quotes may damage it.

1: Any beater you dont mind insuring with a high deductable and for liability only.

2: Far from here.

In Ontario there is no "cheaper", only "less expensive" Im afraid.

If you can make any sense of it, the attached spreadsheet purports to show the risk assesment of Cdn market vehicles in various insurance payout classes...

Pick the ones with the most green bits.

Yeah almost isn't worth looking for cars based on the insurance rates. From my experience of buying last year, Canadians just buy the car first and then think about the insurance. My other half was shocked when I went to research insurance prices after visiting showrooms. And the difference in insurance was negligible.

Although that does free you up to buy the car you want

As for insurance companies - there are a few comparison websites springing up http://www.ratesupermarket.ca/insurance/ for one, but nothing like the GoCompare/ComparetheMeerkat etc you find in the UK.

Ultimately I ended up getting the best rate from my bank, which was disappointing

If you go by the spreadsheet and just tot up the various ratings, and sort for lowest total, then you can justify a Mazda Miata.

Unfortunately I might have a hard time trying to convince my wife I can fit both kids in it for the school run Cheap on gas though, and low depreciation....

Its a bit small (think slimline lunch box... my boss has an F150 as well as a miata, no room for a 2-4 in the mazda)

Maybe a trunk mount luggage rack and some duct tape...

I suggest buying a high performance car. It won't cost you much more to insure than a beater and at least you won't feel as screwed over the insurance. I pay less to insure my Jag here than I would in the UK.

But, how much would it cost if you actually had to do any mileage in it?

Its actually on a regular policy and I can use it for commuting. Just checked, both cars are insured for 10,000 kms.year. Breakdown of costs:

1993 Honda Del Sol
Liability: 285 + 7 + 507
Uninsured: 11
Direct Compensation/Property Damage: 135
Total: $945

2004 Jaguar XJR
Liability: 234 + 5 + 319
Uninsured: 8
Direct Compensation/Propery Damage: 378
Comp: 100
Collision 166
Total: $1210

I know which is better value in my mind....
I dont really know what any of this means

Insurance is very expensive here. I pay twice as much as I did in the UK, and for "family type" vehicles as opposed to the Jag I left in the UK.

Unfortunately I've never been able to find a "Parkers Price Guide" type thing which tells you what insurance groups different vehicles are classified as. The spreadsheet posted by IainK is the closest thing I've seen.

Used vehicle value calculators (i.e black book) also seem to be deliberately difficult to access here unless you are in the trade, or willing to pay. To get an idea of what you might be paying for a used car, there is/was a way to get a used car valuation (albeit only a trade-in price) via the Toyota.ca website.

Don't forget you'll have to pay HST, even on a used vehicle! Bloody criminal, that is!!!

I saw the words "Cheap Car Insurance in Ontario" on a thread title and thought that a mad person had mistakenly wandered into the forum, but you were being serious!! Funny. Good luck, there is none. Sorry. Annoying, that.
