Hi, I am currently on a one year bunac work visa which expires in 2 weeks. I have just applied for a tourist visa, the site says it takes up to 54 days. I was wondering if anyone has done this before and if it did take 54 days. anyhelp would be greatly received as I am running out of time and panicking.

I think that as long as you have applied then when your Bunac visa runs out you are on whats called implied status (as a visitor) until a decision comes back.
