Default CBSA + Citizenship Question

Okay, I have searched the threads for Citizenship, Passport and entry into Canada, because of those keywords, I couldn't see the wood for the trees.

I am now in possession of my Canadian Citizenship Certificate and I hold a UK passport. I am holding off applying for my Canadian passport until the new ePassports are available on July 1st.

If I travel outside of Canada on my UK passport, do I now present my UK passport and Citizenship certificate when I re-enter Canada ? I no longer hold a PR card as this was handed in....

Thanks in advance.

Patrick.

You should be fine travelling on your UK passport. The Citizenship Certificate itself isnt valid for travel but will help establishing proof of citizenship. My advice is take a copy of it with you just in the event that FOSS hasnt been updated showing you as a citizen.

Travel on your Uk passport & take your citizenship card with you. Should be sufficient for most (all?) eventualities. I travelled like this to UK in late 2011 with no problems.

when did they stop with the cards then?
we got one when we became citizens last year.(actually it may have been longer than that now , I can't remember )

The photos on it is a horrible size, it is so close up , you just look at it and see FACE

The certificate is a nasty credit sized laminated card isn't it? That's what I have.

Nope. A letter sized commemorative certificate is what you get now.

You aren't allowed to fold it either - it states that clearly.

I have no idea how you can travel with it easily - hence I got a 5 year non e-passport, at least it fits in my handbag

That's what I got too, in 1974. I also got a fancy certificate.

Thanks. Based on your answer, the CBSA has a system (FOSS) which holds information on whether the person entering hold Canadian citizenship, is this based on a UK passport number ?

Thanks,

Patrick.

No its based on CIC entering the info into FOSS after a PR being granted Canadian citizenship. People born in Canada are not entered into FOSS.
Depending on when a person was granted citizenship that info may or may not be in FOSS.
The Passport one holds is not a factor.
If not in FOSS then a query to CPC Sydney can be requested.

Just wondering why you would hold off getting the passport in order to pay more for it ?

10yr one rather than 5 I'm guessing.
87$ for a 5 yr one now and I think 140 150ish for a new 10yr e one.

So, may be better to wait. I have a 10yr British passport that looks nothing like me now

There won't be any problem at immigration - but there might be with the airline. Although a foreign passport (not requiring a visa) is an acceptable document to travel to Canada, some airlines may not like to carry a passenger without a return ticket.
