They probably mean Iqaluit. Iqaluit Map
It's pretty isolated & unlikely to be what you're looking for.
There is a suppressed demand for building trades here as there is all over at the moment but things do seem to be improving. It would depend as much on the type of place you'd like to live as available work. If you don't care too much about your specific location you would, obviously have more options. Try Googling various Canadian cities/provinces & try to build up an understanding of the country before you plan a reccie trip..
Be prepared for the slew of condescending & utterly unhelpful replies you may receive, on the other hand Iqaluit may be exactly what you're after....

Although what is always amusing is that the sarcastic smart-asses who write Iqaluit almost always spell it incorrectly. And find it very funny each time they do it.

I have always spelt it incorrectly (all three times I've said it). Perhaps you can help the original poster rather than trying to score points?

Maybe a better way to tackle it would be to form an opinion on where you would like to live in Canada and then research whether your skills are needed in that particular location. There is a recession in Canada as well as the UK and in some regions house building has really slowed down. Having said that carpenters from the UK are often all-rounders where in Canada they tend to be trained in one aspect ie framing. You will also find that a cabinet maker in the UK is a very different animal to a cabinet maker here (not so much finesse)

You are a fine one to talk, there are none as blind....

1) I never claim to be helpful
2) I rarely claim to be nice
3) I rarely criticise people for posting attempts at humour (no matter how sarcastic or peurile)
4) I left my supersilious, 'I'm better than you' attitude back in the UK.

To the OP, This link may be helpful as a pretty loose jumping off point,
just to give you the broadest idea to begin with.

Despite appearances there are some incredibly helpful members here from all over Canada & those who are in various stages of moving here, all of whom would be only too glad to offer their advice. It may be easier if you have a clearer idea of the type of area you'd like to live, ie. Mild/harsh Winters, Urban/Rural etc...

1) You must be very proud, thank goodness we have your humour to enjoy...
2) A wise policy considering...
3) Good insurance...
4) Not wishing to dent your self image but you didn't, you really didn't...

Have you been following the advice in the Job Hunting section of the Wiki? Just that you mention applying via web, but no mention of phone calls etc?

Canadians like personal contact, so you will rarely get a response by just sending stuff online.

Good luck. :)

That is fine but then you are more or less expected to follow it up with an phone call a week or so later.

Have you changed your CV over to a Canadian style resume?
