Car Insurance NL
Hi, would welcome any advice and suggestions for a Car Insurer who take a sensible, pragmatic view of the risks associated with newly landed permanent resident.
To provide some context, I'm a 49yo experienced driver who passed their UK test in 1988, has zero convictions and can demonstrate over 9 years UK NCD and 5 years Middle East NCD. I'm looking to insure a Nissan Titan.
TD who insure my Canadian wife's vehicle with have just quoted $1070 per month! Having just spoken to a Supervisor, who advised me look elsewhere, having exchanged my UK Licence it's as if I'm 18 yo with no experience whatsoever.
Any suggestions appreciated, I keep seeing adverts that we're being ripped off in NL, but this is ridiculous.

If it is like other provinces, insurance companies want to see proof of claims history from past underwriters, not no claims discounts offered,(nor renewal notices from brokers) as these are insurable.

Yep, $1070 per month.
I expect to pay more but this is a scam. There are no risk factors. I’m experienced at driving LH vehicles and survived 7 years in Qatar unscathed!
To me it makes no sense, NL Province has a reciprocal agreement with UK, so a simple license exchange. NL doesn’t consider me a new, inexperienced driver otherwise they would put me on the GDP.
I have an unblemished record & previosly insured 3 Lotuses, BMW 335d etc. for yearly premiums similar to the amount TD are quoting for a month! I’m almost 50 yo, I was expecting some benefits 🙂
I’m in a fortunate position as an older, newly landed resident who can make choices over this. However, its the illogical principle that reallty irks me, and lack of rational thought and approach to risk.

Go and talk to a broker, take letters from your previous insurers in the right format (see this link for what insurance companies are looking for: https://www.icbc.com/autoplan/moving...residents.aspx )and a copy of your drivers extract https://www.gov.uk/government/public...driving-record from the other countries. I'm surprised that you got told that by TD as they normally take UK experience into consideration... as do a few others.

Try Action Insurance brokers 738 2228....that’s who we’ve been insured through since I landed 14 years ago. Obtaining proof of claims free history is key. Insurance here is most expensive in Canada - small and unprofitable market, lots of soft tissue claims (see all the lawyers adverts everywhere “make the call” etc). Might also try Johnson Insurance and I hear good things about Rock Insurance brokers in Paradise.

Ahem. Northwest Territories, Yukon. And, in those locations, the vehicles are often plated in the home Province of the owner which attracts a premium load of up to 100% Two or three grand a month isn't a remarkable premium up there. A thousand bucks does seem quite a lot for Newfoundland though; even I've never paid that much.

Thanks Siouxie and Atlantic Xpat for the advice and links, much appreciated. I'm investigating today and will report back when I have a sensible quote.
I realise Insurance is expensive here, I keep seeing the TV adverts that NL residents are paying too much and the Comprehensive Review is underway...

Now then, you are the last person I'd expect to pick up on letting facts get in the way of hyperbole. 35% higher on average than the Maritimes though....VOCM - Public Utilities Board Releases Automobile Insurance Review
