Default Car insurance

Just landed in Vancouver one of my first to do things is to buy a car. is it possible to get insurance without an address as we are staying in a hotel for our first week until we find a rental. Can I use a UK address?

You will need a BC address.

I suggest renting a car initially, using you UK licence and address and book through a .co.uk car rental website, as your insurance coverage will be better to start with, although watch out for the level of 3rd party liability coverage. There are deals out there to be had, particularly with Hertz and Avis.

Your car insurance will be VERY expensive until you are able to provide UK insurance claim-free history IN THE DETAIL AND FORMAT required by ICBC (and you can only get a maximum discount of 8 years x 5%).

Avoid a new/newish car and assume that you will pay at least $2000 per year without correctly-evidenced claim-free history and you won't be in for a shock. As a new customer, you can pay by instalments, but only over 6 months (which gets you a 6-month policy) and that also adds another 10% to the premium if I remember correctly.

We currently have a new car which cost $32000 + taxes and the insurance before 'claim-free years' discounts was over $3500 per year.

Don't forget that you also pay 12% GST/PST on used cars as well as new cars, from both dealers and private sales. You pay this when you insure at ICBC broker for a private sale.
