We have finally decided moving to Canada is what we would realy like to do, but we can't decide which way to go about it. I think I could go via the skilled worker route. I've checked my points and I would just about scrape through without a job offer. I know that would take about 3 - 5 years but in 5 years time we would be financially better off. And I think we would be able to sell our house better by then without having to reduce it drastically to get it sold quickly. We do need to sell the house before coming. Also gives us plenty of time to come over and check a few places out.

What I want to know is do I have to work once we have got in through the SW route. Ideally we would prefer that my husband go out to work and I stay home to sort out the kids. We think everyone would settle in much better that way as that is the situation at home. The only problem is that my husband is a Bus Driver and his job is classed as semi-skilled only, so it would be tricky to come in via his job. I have heard that Calgary Transit were hiring British Bus Drivers on a temporary foreign workers permit. I also read somewhere that they were trying to get Bus Drivers on the PNP list which if that happened then that would be one route.

We really like the look of Alberta - but not the prices. Ideally we would like to come out there relatively mortgage free which we could do if we were to settle in a cheaper province. Anyway, I just can't decide if it would be better to wait a couple of years (hoping the housing market will pick up) then find a job first for me before applying. But then I would be the one stuck working which isn't really what we wanted. Or to start the ball rolling now and be prepared to wait 5 years and keep fingers crossed that my SW visa is accepted

I was a Legal Secretary with 10+ years of experience.(I have been a stay at home Mum for the last 3 years though). Hubby is a Bus Driver and we have 3 children 6, 3 and 22 months. My brother has a house in Vancouver Island and he is currently going through the visa process. They are hoping to have PR in the next year or two. Am I right in thinking that he can't sponsor us because I am over 18 but if he has PR it would benefit my application.

I am just sooooo confused and find myself losing sleep trying to work it all out. Hope this makes some sense because right now my head is spinning.

Welcome to the forum, I would suggest that you have a look through the sticky thread at the top of the immigration forum about the amendments to the immigration law.

There is a new occupation list coming out, and if neither of your occupations are on it then your application may be returned. Unless you can get a job offer unfortunately.

Don`t worry this whole Canadian immigration process is just simply confusing for most people Its full of contradictions and needless waits. But if you have a brother that could sponsor you, this sounds a great option.

It would be fab if my brother could sponsor me but I am sure I read somewhere that you can only sponsor siblings under 18. To be honest I have read so much over the last week it all looks like jumbled mush now.

Zookie is correct a brother can't sponsor you but you will get a couple of extra points on you SW application for having family in Canada.

Might be worth checking out the pnp program for any province you want to settle in. Newfoundland has just added a family part to their PNP which means I can sponsor brother/neice/nephew/sister ............ if I get PR.

Just had a quick look at the PNP's again. BC doesn't seem to have a family stream one. Manitoba did but that's not much use when he is going to live in BC.

You should try Saskatchewan. Houses are cheaper still than most other places and of course once you get in Canada and stay for a while, you can move anywhere you want if you don't like Saskatchewan.

To be honest although my brother is going there BC isn't even on my list. I would prefer somewhere like Windsor, Ontario. We could buy a house outright their with no mortgage. I also have wanted to live near water for as long as I can remember. I have friends in Ohio and Chicago who we would be able to visit for weekends too. And my sisters friends have just moved there from Saskatchewan. They weren't overly impressed with Saskatchewan, nor was my sister when she went to visit. But hey I would go anywhere initially just to get in.
