I would also consider this to gross and uncivilised, however I worked for a number of different employers in my 39 working career in Canada and never once encountered spitting in the workplace.

It appears to be more common outdoors these days which I still find disgusting and unacceptable.

Cheers
Steve

I don't think it has anything to do with computers though Windows does make one want to vent physically.

Isn't spitting considered a healthy activity by many cultures - just a quick way of expelling mucus? The Chinese find nose-blowing far more offensive.

It depends on the set up of the organisation. In small companies people can be fired for any reason or no reason, "I hate that shirt, goodbye", so, yes someone who spat here would be out the door. In larger organisations it's another story, a union may defend spitting as a feature of the worker's culture and, even if they don't, getting rid of someone for doing something they've always done is an uphill battle.

Chipotle

It definitely depends on who you ask and the nature of the organisation you work for, as you will have realised by the other responses. Based on my experience in several different high tech companies in three different provinces, I think the only general observation I could make about working life here is that Canadians really like their weekends to do their own thing. More enlightened companies offer flexible working hours and the possibility of compressed working weeks so staff can get an early start Friday lunchtimes. Where unpaid overtime is required in crisis times, companies and bosses will permit paid time off in lieu during slacker periods. In Canada, as else where, compulsive workaholics either smarten up and get a life, or self-destruct.

You'd suppose wrong then ... again.

I work in an open-plan office, with a multi-cultural, mixed-sex workforce. Nobody spits, makes sexist comments or any of the other "hobbies" you mention.

The client (one of Canada's largest corporations) has strict guidelines on sexual and racial harassment.

The company for whom I work does not tolerate the practices that you describe either.

You two seem to have issues with each other on almost every thread that I read. :)
