Question Canadian TV Sets

Putting to one side the over air transmissions and cable feeds, will they display PAL DVD discs played to them through a PAL/NTSC capable player ?

Been looking at Future Shop and no mention is made of displaying PAL pictures from a direct source.

Paul
PS should mention, would be using UK multi region player with a transformer or multi region Canuck player to a Canadian TV.

If it doesn't say it will, it probably won't. The good news is that HDTV sets usually will; or, at least, all those I've used would display PAL as well as NTSC.

Of course PAL or NTSC on an LCD HDTV look pretty awful.

OK thanks, that's not been my experience using my Plasma in the Uk with both PAL and NTSC discs re 'awful' picture, but having seen HD on it you can certainly tell the difference.

well my family have 3 tv's in canada. and none of them work with a multiregion player!

not sure if this helps, but we bought a Toshiba LCD HDTV in Canada, and a decent DVD player which pays Canadian / US discs (Region 1 I think)...then a friend said go out and buy the cheapest DVD player you can (we got one for $30) and then got a code off internet to hack in and change the region so that one plays our English DVDs (at last we can watch Peter Kay!)...there didn't seem to be an issue with the TV playing either type from either player.

Mine do - cheapo 69 CAD telly for the kid, and a Panasonic rear projection thingy we use. Never occurred to me it would be a problem - if the DVD player's doing the conversion, it doesn't matter that the telly's are likely NTSC-only, does it?

I should mention my UK multi-region player didn't work here. Well, only in flickering black and white. It was PAL/NTSC but I know in the UK for whatever reason it let our dual-format TV do the conversion... but I assumed it would buck up its ideas in Canada and do it itself. Wrong

You're best buying a player in Canada that will support multi-region. Check the site smitp11 above pointed to to see which ones can be made multi-region. That way you know they've got the PAL to NTSC convertor in them.
