Default Canadian prudishness

Hi, I'm Tawni and I moved to the Vancouver area about 14 years ago. I have a daughter in high school and I was shocked by some unexpected Canadian prudishness when she drew a comic for her grade 11 Art class. She was told her drawing (I've attached it to this post} was "excessively violent" according to her teacher, and my daughter even received a note home about it. Any opinions?

I feel that the teacher was correct to object to this cartoon but had the reason wrong; it denigrates women in cliched manner.

Um I am with you there for sure....but excessively violent? Not so sure, depends on the context the teacher was hoping to have students work within really.

However pretty cool animation, and an obvious sense of humor, art is personal anyway, so don't let her worry about it too much. And what's one school note in the context of a lifetime? Keep it in perspective and pigeon hole the teacher as being a bit of a weirdo to say the least

What was particularly strange, and what led me to believe that the teacher was prudish, was the way she ignored the message, "PMS Kills" and how she zoomed in on the second frame...she thought it was "excessively cruel" of my daughter to draw the mugger's toes spread apart and wiggling!

I find it amusing that one teachers reaction gets extrapolated to all Canadians.

If the what I see in the womens changing rooms in the pool or gym is anything to go by they are a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng way from prudish, more is the pity! I think my daughter has been put off puberty and all it's joy for life after seeing some of the overt shapes and sizes there! In some ways though, I am well envious of their ability to strike up conversations with a total stranger while butt naked.......

Reaction = typical PC broomstick up the butt product of todays 'enlightened' education system. I am afraid I would have expected little else and am not in the least surprised.

Me too!

When I go out with the girls from my singing group I am forced to cover my ears and sing "la-la-la!" at many of the topics of conversation! (no it's not that the singng is that bad! )

Well i think she has talent. I fi could draw like that i would be chuffed to bits.

Ignore the teacher, she is obviously just envious, maybe she cannot draw as good as your daughter!!
