Canadian driving test (for current non-driver)
 

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the Canadian driving test is like & how does it compare in difficulty to the UK one? I only have a provisional UK licence & will be learning to drive properly when we are in Canada. I know they do a staggered licence with restrictions to start with.

There is no such thing. Licences are a Provincial thing. Each Province will have its own way of doing things. Where do you intend to move to?

My test in Ontario was none too taxing. The worst part to be honest was not breaking the speed limit on the 401...scariest driving Ive done here, huge trucks barrelling down on me from behind.

Took so long to get round the loop that there was no time for any parallel parking:thumbsup:

Have to concentrate to obey all the speed limits and come to a full stop at the many stop signs too, havent done that much since!

A short while after I did it they announced they would do swaps for UK licenses...

If I remember correctly, you have to drive a pickup truck a hundred yards down a straight gravel track with a Tim's cup in one hand and a doughnut in the other, then straight through the red light at the end.

Without spilling the coffee.

I am sure, regardless of wot province u are in, the speed limit thing applies.....and I don't mean going too fast, I took a test here in Ontario (as the driving license exchange wasn't implemented when we came) it was raining, and they took round an area that had big signs saying "Slow, deaf persons area" in the UK we are taught to drive to the conditions of the road, the speed limit was 40, I sat at 35, but failed my test for going too slow she said, the speed limit is 40, I should have done 40!!!

It was noted on my test that I exceeded the speed limit in a school zone. Still passed though. The standard required to get through a test appears fairly rudimentary.

Ive had three driving tests here. One get my class 5 provincial license, in the days before you could just swap over your UK license. Recently, the class 4 unrestricted license for work, which was in three stages but again pretty easy if you study. Then again for a job im going for which I also passed. Im truly sick of driving tests!

Then you take to the roads and wonder how the hell any of these herberts passed their test. When i did my class 4 in Richmond the place was full of various SE Asian nationals who couldn't speak English and had interpreters along for the test... which i found v funny.

I honestly hate driving in Vancouver, its awful.


p.s. not saying all Asians are bad drivers. Just an observation at Richmond ICBC

I've just been having a look. Is a UK Provisional licence exchangable anywhere on the scale or do you have to start from scratch again?

You have to start from scratch I'm afraid.

Is there any way you could pass your test before you come over, any time 'accrued' with a full licence can go towards the time you have to be restricted I believe.

"Unless you can prove more than 2 years driving experience (other than as a learner) in your previous jurisdiction, you'll be considered a new driver. New drivers will be entered into the appropriate stage of the Graduated Driver's Licensing program, determined by the length of driving experience from the previous jurisdiction."
