Default Canadian child tax / benefit - how and who do you apply to.

My little one is 3.6 years old and now that we are fully submerged in to Canadian lifestyle we are going to make the switch from UK to Canadian child benefits etc.

She has duel nationality and had been here 3.5 years, mother is Canadian, father has a PR.

Can anybody advise us on how to go about this?

I have cancelled the UK contributions with effect from April.

Many thanks.

How did you manage to claim 3.5 years of UK benefits when you were in Canada?

agreed you will be asked to pay back to the uk what you have received as it would appear you havent informed them, we were cut off within the month of informing them we left uk, but you should then get back payment from canada, hopefully it will balance out

Thanks for all the replies, the reason I could claim it was (is for another 2 weeks) because I am here working for a Dept of the UK Govt.

I earn pounds and pay UK tax. Due to my spouse I took out my PR to run concurrently with my assignment. It ends on the 1st March, I then go home, resign and then return as a fully fledge expat.

Thanks Nikki, is it straight forward and does it start straight away?

Yes no back payments to make, but did earn pounds against a strong dollar.

I dont suppose you know anything about RESP's etc, do you? I want to start up a saving scheme for my little one to when we are settled.

they are fairly quick in my experience at getting this set up, no idea re your tax situation re earning pounds against $ and RESP's, perhaps seek professional advice for this part

Just a thought - don't you need to have submitted a tax return before they will pay out child benefit? Of course you may have already done this - though if you have and you have shown that you were earning UK pounds - you probably won't get much child benefit anyway for the first year. Of course you will be eligible to get the $100 a month Universal child benefit.

Maybe it is only for TWP then? Though did you have to give them info on your earnings from the UK in the previous year?
