Im in the same boat..ended up spending 60 to fly from heathrow to manchester, chill 2 hours and then paid £467 for a single from manchester to toronto.

A single from gatwick was £800.

Some options are
Leaving from Dublin if you can, seriously reduces taxes
Trying the airline Condor, longer flights because you fly to Frankfurt first, but much cheaper.

If you search someone like AirCanada and put your departure airport as Dublin, you actually fly back to the UK, change planes and then fly to Canada (Halifax was the airport I looked at).
Has to do with departure taxes I would imagine.
Condor flies from many UK airports, and are cheaper for the same reason. They make the short flight to Frankfurt and then fly to Canada from there.

Be careful with Condor, though. I had to cancel my flight recently and got $0 back.
Also, they use Thomas Cook planes, so if you've ever flown long-haul with them, you should know what to expect.
Other than that, yes, they are cheap.
