Canada! Wow!

Hi All!

I just got back from an amazing trip to the Rockies! Loved Banff! IT was my first time to Canada and I loved it! I am now massively researching how I can move to Canada, specifically the Banff area.

I found this forum and hope to get to know you and maybe even meet some of you when I make the move over!

Welcome to BE, but just remember that visiting a place on holiday, and living there are two totally different things. You rea;lly need to also see just what it's like in the middle of winter as well before deciding.

I'd say go for it! A few years ago my girlfriend and I tried to emigrate to Disneyland after a wonderful week in the magic kingdom but we made the mistake of listening to all the negative, and I suspect jealous, voices back at home. Now we're always wondering, what if? :(

Thanks for the replies!

I am a very positive person and when I put my mind to something I make it happen!

It is a shame you didn’t emigrate to Florida (or is it California that Disneyland is in, I can’t remember) because it’s just a waste if you spend your life regretting things. Never listen to the doom and gloom mongers! You could still go if you really went to. Your biggest hurdle is your own fear.

I am sure I would like Banff even in the winter, I can just learn to snowboard which is something I can’t do here in England, haha!

In ordeer to live in banff I believe you have to be working there or own a business there. That is what my friend who lives there told me (works in one of the hotels).

Its a beautiful place but the snow (I have been told) can be hardcore

Stick around and you'll soon learn that Oink had his sarcastic pants on with that post (he wears them quite a lot, apparently outside his trousers as he thinks he's Superman). ;)

Welcome to BE, good luck with your plans.

Welcome to the forum. It's a quirky place but you'll get lots of good advice, and some Nicky taking. What do you do for a living? Do you have an idea yet how you might get a visa? It's pretty tough these days.

Why can't you learn to snowboard in England?

They have a dome and school in Milton Keynes.

Now that's something you'd want to spell right eh?

I reckon it's to do with gay marriage. Snowboarders being gay skiers and all that.

(Note this post is solely intended to discrimate against snowboarders and is fully supportive of all sexual orientations)

It is true, it's a National Park, remember. Not just anyone can live there.

Even a lot of the people who work there live in Canmore.

The mountains sound lovely and romantic on a spring or summer day and you imagine pristine snow and blue skies, it may be different when you have months of it. It's something that only you can decide. You will find all sorts of help on here, have fun!

Isn't this typical of ski resorts? Whether it's Aspen or Gstaad the people who fill the holes in the roads, or even the holes in the teeth of the residents, live somewhere cheaper and drive up the mountain to work. Even the "residents" aren't resident but just have a house there.

I never said "just anyone can live there". I said I didn't think it was true that you had to be a business owner or employee to live there. There are more than just employees and business owners listed as eligible residents.

Depends on the resort - nearest town to Sun Peaks is 45 mins (56kms) away in the summer or an hour in the winter. Too far to want to commute regularly if a business owner, and too expensive on gas if you dig holes or clean hotel rooms. Property is reasonably affordable, so most employers and employees live here.

Holiday mode can dry up real quick after you've moved here and you have to face the reality of the Alberta job market. If you're coming over for a couple of years on an IEC then have fun.

I bet in Banff there were a bunch of nice characters that were very friendly and who made you feel very welcome. Were there fireworks every night?

Well, as I said I'm normally a very positive person but I am a bit of a glumster at the moment!

I thought it would be simple to just move to Canada because the British queen is head of government but it's not as simple as it seems. It hought it would be like moving to Europe where anyone can do anything. Not happy, people!

But, it's not impossible and I just need to figure out a way to do it, because I WILL do it!

The two big resources Canada has to prevent uncontrolled movement of people to its shores are the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

I think the Disney executives decided that Oinks idea of replacing the famous

M I C K E Y M O U S E song to When the Spurs go marching in dirge was not in line with their family values although its now cheaper to watch a Spurs game than buying a day pass for Disney.
Almost $100 USD for a day pass for a person aged 10 or over.

Waste of time and resources that could be better spent in a pub if you ask me.

That'll get you back on your high.
