Ummm, you haven't got SKY?

I'm not sure what side it's on... If it's SKY there's loads of pubs that'll show it and I'm sure a neighbourly neighbour would let you into their house for a viewing.

It's not about asking odious questions it's more about basic information for instance Canada is.

1) A very big country (2nd in the world after Russia) compared to the UK which, among other things, results in long driving distances, diverse geography and lifestyles so take your pick.

2) A new country compared to the UK and Europe so don't expect to see the same ancient buildings and architecture etc.

3) Inhabited by people who are transient. It's not unusual for families to be scattered across the country or to have an occupation which requires frequent relocation.

4) Not influenced by the Monarchy and class system (blue collar vs white collar rivalry etc.)

5) Full of trees so don't expect to see fields fenced by stone or buildings made of brick or stone.

There's more.

I'll be honest, I'm a touch confused here. My post was in response to someone who seemed to be complaining about people coming on here asking silly questions and not looking them up on the web. My point was I didn't realise it was so bad to ask a real person a Q rather than google it.

The points made above are all obvious. Surely no-one really comes on here and says'Is canada a large country?' or 'is it full of tree's?' or 'do you have ancient buildings?'. If they do, I apologies (for them as well).

unfortunately the blindingly obvious to some, is not to others, i quote my hero " well what do you expect to see out of a torquay hotel window, hearts of wilderbeast etc etc etc...." the point i was trying to make, in agreement with you, is we shouldn't critique the posts of some, or look with disdain at others due to a lack of knowledge or understanding. that sounds a bit twee i know, just can't stand self righteous know it alls.

I've moved on. There's more to horses than their arses.

We do have such questions as "what's Canada like".

I admit that until you have done a bit of research you may not realise just how unanswerable that is.

Actually the prairies are fairly treeless on the whole! ;)

An example: Questions like ..... "is there a hospital in *******?" Surely it's quicker to google "hospital *******" than write the question here and wait for an answer. If the person wanted to know if anyone could share their experience of using that hospital, or working there, for instance, then it would be more useful and interesting to ask here.

That's the sort of thing I was meaning.

Judy once remarked that if the questions here are starting to irritate then maybe it'stime to stop reading them, and maybe I have been here too long .... but just occasionally there comes a question that really does need answering from somebody's personal experience.

And also this is a good place to tell your friends about day to day things that happen (or not), and to let off steam, and get some advice (even if you do have to take a lot of it with a pinch of salt,... or several) :D

I was wondering about the tree thing myself, because I didn't remember seeing many in Saskatchewan :).

You have to go further north to see the trees in Saskatchewan. ;)

It's the resulting living patterns from being a "Large Country" that make a difference . For instance not to many places are close by and handy, people seldom walk to go shopping, distances are described in driving time, a six hour round trip travel time can be a day trip, there's usually space between neighbours, cars are built for comfort rather than handling, a internal flight can be longer than an international one, there are multiple time zones which have to be considered when phoning people. There's many more.

The result of being "Full of Trees" include wood being the preferred building material rather than brick, wood is used as a heating fuel, the fall foliage results in specatular scenery, maple syrup on pancakes is on every breakfast menu (including MacDonalds).

The point is that there's a root cause for most of the differences in living patterns between the UK and Canada so it's a good idea to know what they are and be prepared to adjust rather than being surprised and whining about them.

It seems that the UK media don't carry too much about Canada so UK residents probably know more about living on the Moon.

The topic of this thread was not triggered by the questions on this forum but by what is in the UK daily media about Canada.

For instance in Canada I can get a rough idea of what living in Mexico, USA, Caribbean, UK is like from the various media.

So is there equivalent info about Canada in the UK media?

Not really - though I've found this great little website/forum called British Expats where one can happily discuss all things Canadian, at your leisure, without fear of ridicule - it's wonderful .... :)
