Canada rated mediocre in new socio-economic report
Canada is trailing other top Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries in key socio-economic areas, according to a new report.
The group, which represents countries "committed to democracy and the market economy," said Canada's performance is mediocre.
Canada, along with 16 other countries, was graded on six areas: economy, environment, innovation, education, health and society.

This is interesting "the report cautioned that more than 7.5 million adult Canadians have low basic skills and literacy". If there are only 30 million people in Canada, 7.5 million is a very large proportion of the adult population. Consequence of being a nation of immigrants, I guess.

Basic skills - as in ordering a 'double double' or sorting the correct change for a bus?
It depends on what skills they came in with or if indeed the survey results reflect the immigrant factor?

I would have thought fluency in Mandarin or Cantonese on the West coast would have been more useful? Certainly in areas around here a familiarity with Asian languages would be better placed than either English or French.
