Couldn't find the old Canada post thread so thought i'd start up a new one.

Most recently they cocked up a priority delivery by delivering it 2 days late, and on the box where I ticked 'signature required', the mail delivery person actually crossed that out (you can still see my checkmark underneath his/her pen marks), and proceeded to shove a brand new passport in my community mailbox. I've been on hold for 25 minutes waiting to ream someone out over it. Pretty sure that counts as tampering with mail which IIRC is a federal offence.

Sending the receipt back with Purolator didn't go well either, they dropped the unit number off the package and thus it didn't get delivered on time either. Guess ya can't win lol.

There are several offences that deal with mail (usually theft) under the Criminal Code Of Canada or the Canada Post Corporation Act.

Opening mail

48 Every person commits an offence who, except where expressly authorized by or under this Act, the Customs Act or the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act, knowingly opens, keeps, secretes, delays or detains, or permits to be opened, kept, secreted, delayed or detained, any mail bag or mail or any receptacle or device authorized by the Corporation for the posting of mail.

Criminal Code Theft from mail

• 356 (1) Everyone commits an offence who
  • (a) steals
    • (i) anything sent by post, after it is deposited at a post office and before it is delivered, or after it is delivered but before it is in the possession of the addressee or of a person who may reasonably be considered to be authorized by the addressee to receive mail,
      
    • (ii) a bag, sack or other container or covering in which mail is conveyed, whether or not it contains mail, or
      
    • (iii) a key suited to a lock adopted for use by the Canada Post Corporation;
      
  • (a.1) with intent to commit an offence under paragraph (a), makes, possesses or uses a copy of a key suited to a lock adopted for use by the Canada Post Corporation, or a key suited to obtaining access to a receptacle or device provided for the receipt of mail;
    
  • (b) has in their possession anything that they know has been used to commit an offence under paragraph (a) or (a.1) or anything in respect of which they know that such an offence has been committed; or
    
  • (c) fraudulently redirects, or causes to be redirected, anything sent by post.

Problem is ....... how do you prove that it was the mailman who changed the designation for signature required??

It could have been anyone who handled that piece of mail.

Whats happening with this strike?

Both sides are still negotiating. They seem to still be talking and working with a mediator based on the last update a couple of days ago.

I beleive the union would need to give 72 hours notice before a strike can start.

If they have not reached a settlement by the time you want to send your citizenship application, I would send it Fedex to be safe.

I tried to look for a price with Fedex and I couldn't work it out online.

I know with Xpress post (including tracking and signature) it will be around $35 so I don't know if Fedex would be similar price or more expensive..? (never used a courier company before)

Appears citizenship application also goes to Sydney, NS, I would say around $40 using a Fedex envelope (free from fed ex drop off box or store) as that is what I was quoted for my PR card renewal, I ended up risking Canada Post as I had to go cheaper and Xpress post was $20 using my own envelope.

No service is really any faster though, from BC to that far away, seems 3-7 days is the norm depending on what day of the week you send it, took Canada Post 6 days with Xpresspost, sent Wed October 3, and arrived on the 9th for my PR card renewal.

Looking at the fedex website using my postal code in east Vancouver, rate is $41.89 using a Fedex envelope. 7 day trip, or $45 dollars for a 5 day trip.

For the quote I chose Fedex envelope and 0.5 pound weight, for 1 pound weight the rate is $52.52.

Also check UPS ..... OH has used them as they have an office nearby, and they have seemed well priced.

and Purolator, while owned by Canada Post, will not be on strike.

I won't risk sending any important post with Canada post any more since I send my registered citizenship application on Aug 12 was not signed for it and still on tracking it says in transient. they assured me it has been delivered but till now I can not be sure if delivered or not as it is 2 month and no acknowledgement yet. So with Fedex you will be sure it is delivered and you sleep well at night. I send Fedex to USA - cost about $50 and that was next day delivery So I assume it ll slightly cheaper in Canada. good luck!

Since this is a new thread, I think it fair to repeat what I've said on the original one.
No complaints about CanadaPost. The only time I have used a courier was a prepaid label for the return of a laptop. My PR application was sent registered but passport renewal docs were sent normal post.

Everything expected arrives, Amazon deliveries via CanadaPost are received earlier than amazon says.

Canada Post rings my bell or knocks on the door and waits for someone to answer before handing over a parcel. Courier companies, except for something heavy and large, will leave a parcel on the doorstep. Just the other day there was a knock, I went to the door, saw the parcel on the doorstep and the courier van was already driving off.

I send an Express Post envelope to BC each month and it usually takes 3 days. If I mail it on Monday it often gets there on Wednesday, and almost always before Friday.
In Russia mail delivery can be harsh:

Good grief people you are using a service that involves human beings and no system is perfect.
Stuff is sent everyday between points A to B and I suspect that in most cases arrive without any hiccups.
So short of delivering the stuff you want sending or picking it up yourself you rely on these services. Even then after picking it up you could trip up and drop the box breaking the item
Canada Post are infamous for going on or threatening to go on strike much like the Royal mail and I dare say a few others. Yes it can be a PITA not knowing if your item could be delivered in time but thats life and strikes, walkouts are just not limited to mail services.
If you think the extra $50 is worth it overnight to say end of 5 business days then go for it.
Maybe Im lucky but for the past 30 odd years never had a birthday card go missing be it sent from the UK or Canada using Royal Mail or Canada Post. Also never had a parcel go missing using a variety of shippers.
Until they find a way of securing email or online portals then certain stuff needs to be sent via mail/courier unless of course you are willing to sacrifice your personal details being hacked.
