Hiya,
I think the show you might mean is called Get a New Life and it was on BBC2. I have not seen the Canada episode but sounds interesting! Try You Tube, they have everything!

It's still on I believe. I've seen quite a few different episodes with various parts of Canada.

Think it was Get a New Life and that episode related to Canmore near Banff I believe. The husband got a job in a specialist field with a local oil company through his fire brigade training in some kind of Chemical Spills/Disaster type stuff. Is that the one ?

I still recall that house they rented (wow) and just how close to the wildlife they lived. I think that is everyone's initial impression of how a timber home in the Canadian wilds would be and the programme stereotyped beautifully Brought home the realities of rural living, only having one car, and what not to do with the family dog (ie, let him out the back door). Would love a 'follow up' programme on these people (and others featured in the series) - does anyone know if they ever made any?

They moved to Bragg Creek and they still live there (they were debating moving to Cochrane - the presenters recommended this but they chose not to accept the advice).

A friend of mine is very good friends with them, but does not have a good word to say about them.

They have been a number of threads about them on this site, a search may locate them.

Did a bit of a search and it's still on, but on UKTV Style now.

Hope that helps.

It's not a very good programme. It painted a very unrealistic picture of the emigration process even at the time and that was several years ago.

The only thing it's good for is you get nice shots of Calgary and Bragg Creek.

I remember watching it at the time and thinking how ridiculous it was that they relocated a couple with a toddler and a couple of pets into the wilds of Bragg Creek where there were several animals outside waiting to eat said pets AND they put them into a lodge type house up a hill in the woods and the wife couldn't drive in snow so she couldn't get down the hill which led to her feeling pretty isolated and miserable.

I remember reading an interview with Rich (think that was the hubby's name) at the time and he said the programme was heavily edited, especially the bit where they make the surprising discovery that he had done a training course in disaster recovery (think he was a paramedic) and that turned out to be their route into Canada.

It was all a bit staged.

Sorry to hijack this thread but how do you find out if your training/experience/work is wanted in Canada? I've looked at the list of occupations on wiki but my husbands isn't listed but he also has done disaster training as he is a aviation firefighter. Any ideas?

The only way to find out is to check the OUP lists and to apply for lots of jobs! Read the Wiki (on blue bar at top of page), paying particular attention to the info about the OUP lists (just type it into the search) and the Job Hunting section.

Then he needs to get job hunting! That's your only way of finding out what his chances of employment are I'm afraid.
