Canada - How long?

For those of you who are already in Canada, or indeed for those of you planning to move over, how long do you think your stay in Canada will be for?

Where's the "I've got no bloody idea, and I change my mind every five minutes" option?

I'll have one of those too, if you don't mind.

Never is a long time, but I can't foresee any circumstances that would make me want to live anywhere else.

However, once the rain starts properly next month I'm sure I'll be dreaming of a second home in Arizona.

That's most probably the same as "They'll bury me here."

Another vote for a don't know option. But for the foreseeable future is my best guess...

For the foreseeable. A warm winter retreat wouldn't hurt.

Re: Canada - How long?

I've picked the "they'll bury me here" option, but chosen with the get out clause that it does really depend on whether our kids stay here as adults, or choose to go back to the UK. I love Canada, but I don't have strong enough negative feelings about living in the UK again to keep me over here if my children moved away...

1) How come someone voted twice?

My children look destined to end up, one in the UK, one in Switzerland, one unclear but most likely the US. I don't think I should ruin any of those countries for them by moving there.

We have no intentions of living anywhere else. That said, as others have said, I wouldn't say no to being a Snowbird!

Cos I could. I intend to stay here, but dont desperately want to spend every winter of my retirement here.

To an outsider the results so far look overwhelmingly positive, but they probably dont realise that "They will bury me here" really means "I will never make enough money to be able to afford to escape this frozen hell" in some cases;)

Got to get there first - another month to wait. It's agonising!!

Excellent point.

No surprises but I chose the until I retire button.

I chose the They'll bury me here choice but that's as long as I can be a snowbird and it's not going to necessarily mean I'll be in Alberta.

Our plan was 2-5 years....but who knows?????Although we miss sunny Scotland:sneaky:I think we'd miss being here equally.

Re: Canada - How long?

Probably for ever but that's because we're already lucky enough to be snowbirds.

Having said that as all the kids and grandkids are in UK, if one of us died, would the other return home to family???? And if so, would we bury the other one here or take them back??? Oh, stop making me think about these tricky questions

Well, gryph, it's actually time to go home! We were fine being a family of international gypsies while the kids were small, but we always said we'd go back to the UK when they got to High School age, and that's just about where we're at.

The kids have never really spent any time in the UK, so it'll be good for them to develop some sense of identity with the UK. Plus, family will be closer etc.

We're lucky in that we have a nice house in a nice part of the UK, with good schools nearby etc. We went overseas for the adventure of it, not because we wanted to "escape" the UK, so we have no problems going back for a while. We're really looking forward to it, actually.

Wow, I thought once you expat types got the travelling bug you just rotated round the world every few years until you retired!!

Good for you!! We didn't want to escape the UK either. We just fancied some skiing!!!

I'm sure that once the kids are through High School, me and MrsDV will be off again!

[And yes, giving up the weekly skiing will be a wrench...]

Hee-hee! That is exactly why we're leaving!! ;)

I must admit, I've never understood anyone who says they're moving to Canada "for the kids". But that's another argument.

Well, I could say 'me, I wake up every morning and thank my lucky stars for the gift I've been given' but no, I cannot lie, it's him, definitely him - luckiest man alive! IMHO
