Default Canada cheque (govt) into uk bank

I got a cheque for just over a £1000 from the kind tax office in Canada. As I am presently in the UK, I had to deposit it in my Natwest account.

Generally speaking, any idea how long they take to clear?

The Natwest cashier told me it could be up to six weeks, even for a cheque from the government of Canada. I was surprised, I could understand if it was a personal cheque but these are pretty much a bankers draft.

Thanks.
