We certainly do a lot of Java, but there seems to be substantially less of a market for software development in Canada than the UK, at least in the West (possibly Vancouver excepted).

I've been about 50:50 C++ and Java in the time I've been working here.

Not sure where you are currently based, but as a general rule of thumb, hourly rates in Toronto are half of what they are in London. Go to other provincial capitals, and rates generally will decrease even further.

Java was created by a Canadian, James Gosling of Calgary, AB.

My boyfriend is a Java Developer and we're in Vancouver, he's constantly getting head hunted (not that he can do a lot with that until his PR comes through!)

I can't speak for the rest of Canada, but I know that's a hot skill wanted here (how salaries compare to the UK, I'm not sure as I didn't deal with anything in IT back in England).

I'm a Java developer. I can only speak to my own experience, but overall I'm financially way better off in Vancouver than I was in London.

That's at least partly because I changed industries (From a non-profit to an investment bank!), though.

Yes Canada is next to USA, correct. A good thing to say to Canadian interviewers is "you guys are just USA-Lite, right?" - big point score. As for location, consider the state of Yukon, and its main city, Whitehorse. Good quality of life and plenty of space.

Don't be so dismissive. Whitehorse is packed with semi literate Java developers.
