I'm not sure what it is. She went into hospital a little while ago, after compalining to her GP that she'd been feeling unwell for a while. She was in for about two weeks, while they tried to figure out what was wrong. It was clear that she had an infection of some sort because her white cell count was double what it should be but they couldn't figure out where the infection was. An antibiotic drip did nothing. The idea of a blood scan came up. The hospital didn't have the right bits, so she was sent home until the bits arrived. They have now arrived.

As far as I can make out, blood is taken and the white cells separated. Those cells are marked with something (I'm guessing an isotope) and then injected back in. A while later a scan is taken to find out where the white cells are clustering, ie, where the infection is.
