I'd buy the van in Regina, drive it to Calgary, park it till you return then drive the family to Regina in it. That way you don't have to mess around with inspection or changing registration as it will already have a Sask plate on it.
The best thing would be for some friendly Calgary BE'er with a big house and yard to offer to store the van while you're back in the UK then host you and your family for a night when you return; it's always nice to begin a long trip when you're well rested.
