Calgary June 5th, here we come.

Hi all, we are off to activate our visas and do some job and house hunting in the Calgary area. Anyone else flying Air Canada from Heathrow to Calgary tomorrow.
Also do we need goods to follow even though we are returning in two weeks. We have got a list but obviously not as detailed as may be required.

Thanx.
:)

You will need your goods to follow list when you land, this can be updated when you return permanently.

Good luck with the trip, the forecast is not good for your first few days :(

I'd be careful about the "updating when you land permanently" as I don't believe this is correct.

The purpose of the goods to follow list is to show what items you owned at the time of landing, for the purposes of tax. Updating the list suggests you have purchased items after landing, from outside of Canada and, if this is true, you will need to pay tax on them when they are brought into Canada. If you own items now, include them in your list. If you then choose not to bring them, no harm is done.

Best of luck

Hi,

I have chosen not to listen to the weather much now! last night they said we would wake up to rain and the sun is shining!

Goods to follow is all the stuff you have sent in your container, you just need to show them at customs and then when your container arrives you take that form to customs so they can see what you have packed in your container.

Hope all goes well for you tomorrow. We flew from gatwick back in March so been here 3 months now.

Send me a PM and maybe we could meet up once your settled

Regards

Hi guys we are only activating our visas, we don't have a move date yet. So that's why we don't have a full list, nothing is packed yet. We got a couple of quotes on email and added a few bits and a few more boxes to their list.

OK got Q107 on and they just said snow for Saturday!!

Thanks for the invite lisadd will be in touch.

:)

:)

All the same we had to show our GTF list on landing and I was told it cannot be added to afterwards - I was told explicitly by a customs officer that anything else would have duty charged on it.

If your container contains items not declared when you first land you do have to update the list otherwise you are importing undeclared goods into Canada. It's best to declare everything on the goods to follow list when you first land and if you decide not bring the items you should still update the list when you land permanently. I know many people who have done this and there has never been a problem.

Sam you're right about having to update the list to omit/add goods.... but beware - anything extra that wasn't on the GTF list originally presented will be liable for import duty. The problem isn't in updating the list but in possibly being liable for fees - my recommendation would be to put EVERYTHING you currently own on the list - then update to show what's no longer being brought in.

Firstly, congrats on getting to the end of the journey. Hope you have a good trip across.

We believe Almost Canadian is correct to point out that updating your GTF list after it has been stamped by customs opens you up to the possibility of incurring a hit on tax, so, even if many of the entries are general in nature, try and make the GTF list cover all your belongings. You've no doubt seen this but the WIKI article helps.
